A hat is introduced to the audience, shown empty and placed upon the table. A solid wooden die and a handsome wooden box containing two compartments and four doors are introduced. The die is placed in one of the compartments and all four doors are closed. The die is distinctly shown in the box. The magician now commands the die to leave the box, opening one compartment to show that it has vanished. He closes that compartment and opens the other side, which is also seen to be empty. This is repeated several times, the suspicions of the audience becoming very definite as they hear the die sliding back and forth between the compartments. They are also untrustworthy that the magi is only showing them one compartment at a time. Several spectators excitedly announce that they got a flash of the die, as the magi apparently made a mistake and opened the "wrong" side. As many time as the die appears in the box on both sides it will eventually completely vanish from the die box. The die ends up back in the hat and can be passed around for examination.
